I love New York.

Maybe it’s because I was born in New Jersey and lived my pre-K years with a view of the Manhattan skyline.

Or maybe it’s just because NYC is awesome.

There’s always something new to see–and taste!

For me last weekend, that was at the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop (East Village)

Order the Salty Pimp (don’t be shy)

Chocolate dipped soft serve injected with salted caramel (even the cone–which can be gluten free if you need!)

It’s SO good.

And zero guilt, because in NYC you can just walk it off

Which we did in Central Park!

And the High LineΒ

And at High Rock Park, Staten Island (just a ferry ride away)

And lots of walking on the streets!Β

Luckily a good coffee boost is easy to find in NYC.

My latest fave is the cappuccino at 12 Corners (Lower East Side)

Coffee that shimmers!

I loved this cappuccino so much I went back for another the next morning. πŸ™‚

(Bonus gluten free tip:Β Tu-Lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery has the best coffee cake.)

But by far my most FAVORITE reason to visit New York now?

It’s where my daughter lives. πŸ™‚

Where have you been hanging out lately? Any cool treats or sights to share?Β

Happy Weekend!

I definitely would like to walk the High Line in spring or summer. The flowers must be amazing! Thanks, Jennette!

I have yet to go to NYC…but I’ll be headed there for the SCBWI Winter conference in Feb! Winter is not the best time to walk around to sight-see though. And also not the best time for ice cream but that Salted Pimp sounds amazing! You have such a beautiful family!

I wish I could see NYC through your eyes. Every time I’m there it’s because I’m there for a conference, an interview, or to see Broadway musicals or an opera. Have not made it to Central Park, which looks beautiful. Your photos look so lovely. I wish I had your sense of adventure about NYC.

You capture a lot of what i feel about New York, Coleen, and I am so glad for this opportunity to live here. And now I need to visit High Rock Park.

High Rock park was a happy find. It was our second trip to Staten Island and the first time, we’d only really seen the ferry area and the mall. So cool to get the nature perspective! I imagine living in NYC is pretty great, Joanna. πŸ™‚

Gorgeous day. Never been to Staten Island. You make it sound worth the trip. And how fun is that, to have your daughter in the city?

Coleen I love New York it is one of the most amazing cities. It has a heart of its own and when I got of the plane I could feel its pulse. Thanks for refreshing my memory. Kath.

I love NY too because I grew up there. I’m not really a city person, but there’s nowhere on earth like NYC. I love Central Park – the zoo, the carousel, the playgrounds, the sheep meadow, the ice skating rink, the reservoir, the bridle path with it’s beautiful cherry blossoms in springtime, the boat pond, and we used to take family bike rides on Sundays on the park drive. Love being able to walk everywhere. Also love the Museum of Natural History, and getting to see musicals on Broadway… although at this point it’s been awhile… And if you haven’t been to Serendipity’s for frozen hot chocolate you must go! πŸ™‚

I’m also not a big city person, but NYC has that something special. So cool that you lived there, Susanna! Serendipity’s frozen hot chocolate has been on my list for a long time. Don’t know how I keep missing it! More reasons to go back…

Wow, what a great trip, Coleen! Love these pics. That mural is great and Central Park is amazing! Btw, I want that cup of cappuccino RIGHT NOW! lol Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

What a gorgeous day in New York! Wow, what a beautiful picture of Central Park. Are you sure you shouldn’t be a photographer? Love the family photo too! So the daughter is in the Big Apple? How far away is that for you? See, that’s how I measure my security as a mom. lol. Oh Coleen, I have to say that you are dealing with this so well! πŸ™‚

    1. Coleen Patrick

Thanks, Karen. I do love taking pictures. πŸ™‚ It’s just fun for me.
And yeah, there are a lot of things about my daughter living in NYC that I have to kind of just set aside. The control freak side of me likes to pipe up every now and again though!

  9. Dagmara-GlamistaHome

I love big cities, there is always so much to do and new places to discover. I wish we had something equivalent to the Central Park, such beautiful get-away right in the city. That ice cream sounds delicious and decadent! Thank you for sharing your trip with us.

    1. Coleen Patrick

It was so decadent. I like when dessert is rich like that because then I’m done, don’t need anything else. Sometimes I have a sweet but then feel like I need another, and so on. Not so with the Salty Pimp. πŸ™‚

Looks like a wonderful trip. What do we have to do to get you back to Jersey? (The NJ SCBWI events really are some of the best! Of course I’ve only actually been to the NJ ones:) )

I haven’t been to NYC in a long time. However, for being part of the drama club, my daughter gets a reduced-price ticket to a Broadway show in May — and I get to be a chaperone!! We won’t have a chance to visit all the amazing sights you posted about, but I have never seen a Broadway show, so I’m pretty darn psyched.

    That cappuccino looks sooo tasty!!
