The One Where I Compare Myself to a Prickly Porcupine

This week I spent hours researching website logos.

I already have a logo, but I just wanted to tweak mine, maybe find a little inspiration, make it somehow more representative of me.

Well, at least that’s what I told myself. I’m pretty sure though that I went looking for validation.

On the internet. *sigh*

Yup. I went against all my Poltergeist quoting and went directly into the internet light.

But it’s so shiny (and don’t forget the entertaining cat around the bend).

And of course, I find super amazing, beautiful mind-blowing websites that make me wonder why am I not a marine biologist who takes her flying ship into the sky to paint sparkly whales swimming with the clouds?

Um yeah.

Sometimes I forget that I get to be me.

This is me. The smaller 1970s version. But a lot is still the same.

Obviously blue haired dolls make me smile/feel grateful/feel as if I have a special super power. But so does writing for kids and teens. And drawing. Then there are cookies and Scottish Breakfast tea and of course my family and road trips, and taking pictures, and people who are funny.

Okay so I’m also stubborn. And prickly, especially before I have my coffee (but I’m still a morning person, just don’t try to have a conversation with me). But there are advantages to these powers. I’m sure of it.porcupine coffee snowstorm signature

I love feeling inspired by the world around me (including stuff on the internet), but Teddy (Mr. Roosevelt or President, if you’re feeling proper) said it best:

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

So for the sake of blue haired dolls and cookies everywhere (and YAY joy!), it’s for the best that I get back to writing and drawing and other stuff, i.e. being me.

#grateful

Do you ever forget that you get to be you? Are you a morning person?

  1. Your post put a smile on my face. Being the best of you is all you can hope for. And, you are unique as are your books and posts. I always enjoy visiting. I used to be a morning person, but after an injury my time clock changed. I am more of a night person.

    1. Aw thanks, Patricia! And because of the snow I’m thinking about our creative output as snowflakes–no two are exactly alike. 🙂
And I like reading your reviews because I like your unique perspective!!

  2. I only forget to be me when the green-eyed monster rears its ugly head and I think I should be doing what someone else is doing to achieve success…but then I remember that I have my own talents and dreams and I need to be true to myself and walk my own path however hard it may seem sometimes. 🙂

Did you ever find an inspiration for a new logo?

I have to get back to writing, too! Hope your snowfall amount won’t be too bad!

    1. Oh those pesky “shoulds”–they get to me more than I like.
And I didn’t figure out a new logo. I’m working on selling some illustrations and wanted a logo for the back and thought I could make something that encompassed my brand. For now I’m good with my logo as my name (and the hearts). It’s me. Hee hee.
      Happy writing!

  3. I am a morning person, but my gal is not! Makes for some interesting moments when I try to talk to her and she glares at me with the look of “I’m going to kill you if you don’t shut up”.

Hope you don’t get too much snow where you are!

  4. There will always be someone who has a prettier website, a cooler logo, a faster car, a nicer house, bigger closets (!!), and on and on and on… All we can do is just ignore that and be ourselves. For me, that is soooooooo not a morning person… now if only my job would let me be more myself, LOL!

  5. I just realized I liked your post from another website that I run, sorry about that! (against extinction) Anyway, great post. I get in these moods of comparison too, and it’s a frightful place to be. I think it’s human nature, and maybe instead of letting it drag us down, look at it as a way of challenging ourselves to up our game in some way.

I love your porcupine. Stay warm and safe with all that snow coming!

    1. Kinda works that you liked from against extinction seeing as this is a human nature post…? 🙂 And I think you’re right about the challenge aspect, because I tend to feel better or kinda more powerful when I think of it as a hurdle to get over. Especially if it felt like a particularly massive one!

  6. Actually, I never forget to be me, but there ARE days I’d like to! lol And I’ve never been a morning person simply because I’ve long been a night owl. Of course, that’s done me nothing but harm and I WANT to be a morning person, but it’s SO hard to get to bed early enough *sigh* I used to wake up “OK,” but for the past four years, I actually NEED coffee in the morning to help wake up my brain. Ugh!

  7. I think your website rocks, Coleen. The porcupine in a snowstorm is adorable! Stay safe and warm. Oh, I’m not a morning person at all. Those early mornings when I babysit the grands are rough. Good thing they’re so cute! 🙂

  8. I do sometimes forget that I get to be me. (Thanks for the reminder, by the way.) No, I’m not a morning person. Just ask my husband (who is).

    Love your porcupine.

  9. Hi, Coleen. I LOVE your porcupine! And I especially love your comment that you get to be you – something I need to keep reminding myself of! Comparisons are mostly awful and remembering that “I get to be me” will put a smile on my face every time. Here’s to each of our unique talents an personalities!

  10. “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Amen to that.

I don’t think you’re a prickly porcupine at all. I think you’re an artist (which essentially makes you a prickly procupine, but it sounds better).

I love your creativity and I would hate to see it change. Just keep keeping on my friend.

  11. Oh how we are so glad that you get to be you! You brighten up our world with your amazing insights, photography and artful delights. Such as that cute little porcupine. I think he (or is it a she?) would make a outstanding mascot. As you know, a pelican serves as mine and I cannot quite get rid of him. But I think he’s kind of cute. Love cookies and Scottish Breakfast tea. Sounds like the perfect thing on a cold, wintery day. Stay safe and warm Coleen! 🙂

  12. I don’t tend to compare myself to others. That’s not out of some inner peace or new-agey acceptance, rather it’s because I’m often too lost in my own world! I don’t always notice what’s going on around me. That’s something I need to work on. 🙂

I’m not really a morning person, but I’ve become one. I get up and exercise first thing. That wakes me up better than anything.

    1. I like when I’m lost in my own space, lol. When I go through insecure periods, I feel like a turtle without my shell. SO uncomfortable. And then I make it worse by telling myself I’m falling short. But I know that internal dialogue now and with my stubbornness and stellar arguing skills, I can refute it most days. 😉

  13. Being me seems particularly hard from Dec. 15 to Jan. 23. And then! The witch hazel blooms and all is well again.

Fun and happy post. Thanks. Hope the snow storm was cozy more than a drag.

    1. Thanks, Julia! Yeah, for me the season can play a part in that sometimes all I need is a little bit more sunshine.
And snowstorm was cozy, but not interested in another. 🙂

  14. Coleen you are so gifted and I agree we must never compare. Instead I get inspired by others and love to see how creative this world is. I am a morning person and do all my best work first thing. Love your porcupine he or she is so very cute.
